Grapes and Your Garden Arbor
Garden
arbors make for a great place to grow your
grapes or other vine fruits.
A garden arbor is a structure that can be
used for many things such as a separation for
different areas of your garden, a place for
relaxing, or simply as a decoration for your
garden. One of the best uses of your garden
arbor, however, is for growing grapes. The fact
is grapes will grow almost anywhere in the
United States. You just have to make sure you
have the right one for your climate. They can be
a great hobby and you値l be able to enjoy the
fresh fruit as it grows or use it to make edible
delights.
When you use your garden arbor for growing
grapes, you値l want to make sure you have one
that is large enough. Most arbors that are used
for growing grapes should be deeper than the
average four feet and you can do a wider arbor,
as well. You値l also want to make sure you have
the arbor made out of wood, which provide a nice
growing habitat for the grapes. The vines will
grow quite fast and will soon cover the whole
thing which will create shade for your sitting
area. Your garden arbor should be located in a
sunny location for your grapes to grow well and
if they are taken care of properly, they may
live between 50 and 100 years.
When you purchase grapes for your garden arbor,
you値l probably buy rootstock that is at least
two years old. Still, it can be close to another
two years before you値l see any grapes, however,
if any appear the first year, you should remove
it to help get better roots and healthier plants
the following years. Grapevines can also be
tough to train to grow in the right direction.
One of the easiest ways to hand this is to use
large staples on the arbor. These should only be
hammered into place at the half-way mark so you
can put coated wire through them. These will be
used for tying the grapevine branches to the
arbor.
Choosing grapes for your garden arbor does not
have to be difficult. There are some varieties
that are great to eat as grown, while others are
suited more for making wine or jellies. Make
sure you check for what grapes do well in the
zone you live in. Some do very well surviving in
cold weather as long as winter precautions are
taken. You will be able to find this information
at your local gardening center.
Your garden arbor can be used as a place of
relaxation, as well as growing grapes. When the
vines become thick, it will provide you a nice
shady place to sit, as well as some enjoyment
for your taste buds.
